1. Real-Time Evapotranspiration (ETo) Tracking
We don't rely on generic seasonal averages. Our calculator connects directly to the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) and Open-Meteo. When you enter your zip code, the system fetches the live Evapotranspiration (ETo) data for your specific microclimate for the next 7 days. ETo measures exactly how much water evaporated from the soil and transpired from plant leaves, giving us a precise baseline of what needs to be replaced. (Note: If you are outside of California or state sensors are down, our system automatically falls back to global meteorological satellite data).
2. Factoring in Your Canopy Size
A massive, mature tree with a 20-foot canopy transpires significantly more water than a newly planted sapling. Because an avocado tree's root zone roughly mirrors its canopy width, the calculator uses your exact Canopy Diameter to determine the total square footage of soil that requires moisture replenishment.
3. Crop Coefficients (Kc) & Leaching
Avocado trees use water differently than grass or citrus. We apply an avocado-specific Crop Coefficient (Kc) to the baseline weather data, and if you enter in your Canopy Size we calculate the Kc for you, so you don't have to! We also factor in a standard Leaching Requirement—a crucial step for California growers that ensures salts from the water supply are pushed down past the root zone rather than building up and burning the roots.
