Fuerte Avocado Season: Transitioning from Hass Harvest to California’s Heritage Variety
Fuerte avocado season marks one of the most exciting seasonal transitions on our California grove each autumn. As late summer turns into fall, our summer Hass trees are completely picked clean, paving the way for the green-skinned beauties that put California avocados on the map more than a century ago. Here is what this seasonal shift looks like in the orchard and why the return of the Fuerte variety is worth celebrating.
The End of the California Hass Harvest
Commercial Hass avocados hold the spotlight across grocery stores for most of the year, but on an authentic working grove, harvest windows are governed strictly by tree physiology and climate. By late September and October, our Hass harvest reaches its final chapter.
After months of hand-picking and shipping fresh fruit across the country, our Hass branches are stripped clean—aside from a modest household stash we hold back for our own kitchen table. While saying goodbye to Hass always feels like turning a page, it offers the grove an essential window to recharge ahead of the winter chill.
Why Fuerte Avocados Are a Heritage Favorite
Before Rudolph Hass patented the Hass avocado in 1935, the Fuerte was the undisputed king of the California avocado industry. First imported from Atlixco, Mexico to Altadena, California in 1911 by Carl Schmidt, the Fuerte variety earned its name—meaning “strong” in Spanish—after it survived the devastating freeze of 1913 while other imported varieties perished.
Fuerte avocados offer distinct culinary characteristics that set them apart from standard grocery varieties:
- Skin Texture and Color: Unlike Hass, which turns dark purplish-black when ripe, Fuertes retain a vibrant, smooth green skin even at peak ripeness.
- Pear-Shaped Elegance: Fuertes boast an elongated, classic pear shape with a sleek, medium-thin skin that peels away cleanly.
- Rich, Creamy Flavor: With a noticeably lower water content and a silky, buttery mouthfeel, Fuertes deliver a delicate, hazelnut-like finish that many long-time avocado enthusiasts prefer over any other cultivar.
Looking Ahead: Harvest Timelines and Grove Recipes
Our Fuerte harvest begins in November and runs through the winter months until the trees have yielded their final fruit. Because these avocados mature throughout the cooler months, their oil content steadily rises, delivering richer flavor with every passing week of the season.
In addition to packing and shipping fresh harvest boxes directly from our trees, Becca is heading into our kitchen to develop and film an original series of grove-to-table recipes highlighting the Fuerte’s smooth texture. From balanced dressings to winter salads, cooking with a heritage green-skinned avocado requires a slightly different touch than working with high-tannin commercial fruit.
Be the First to Experience the Winter Harvest
Because we harvest our heritage trees on a limited seasonal schedule, our Fuerte supply is available only while the trees bear fruit.
