Hummus is a great healthy snack, and adding avocado is just a smart, delicious way to make it even better. Avocado adds a creaminess that can't be replaced with any other ingredient, and makes this already healthy snack even more nutritious.

Avocado Hummus
This classic Mediterannean recipe is given a great spin when you add avocado. While hummus is simple at first glance, to get the right consistency and flavor really takes trial and error. I went through 3 different iterations before I found the right taste. This is a great snack, additional healthy fats added with the avocado, or it goes great as a side dish to a Greek-themed dinner.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
Two faves in one – Let's be real - who doesn't love hummus? And you obviously love avocado (since you're on an avocado recipe blog!), so what could be better than putting these two together. This is honestly my favorite recipe I've developed for the blog so far.
Sensitive-diet friendly – I haven't talked about this a lot, but I want to more. So many people struggle now with dietary restrictions. I truly believe that's from being away from our natural, ancestral diet for so long. This recipe is made from whole foods - no seed oils, no sugar, gluten-free, corn-free. While some are sensitive to chick peas, which are a legume, it fits the bill for most people!
Great snack or side – Avocado hummus is a great healthy snack idea, served with some cucumber, carrot, and red peppers slices, or perfect as an appetizer or side for Mediterannean night.
Ingredients
Avocados - You can buy avocados fresh from our California grove when in season (approx. March-August). Visit our shop page, but any avocados will do!
Canned chick peas – Try to find a brand that is simple chick peas in water or olive oil. The fewer additives in canned foods, the better. I buy Kroger brand Simple Truth.
Olive oil – This should be a pantry staple for a whole-foods-based kitchen. Olive oil is my go-to for any dish where I'm not heating the oil.
Tahini – Ground up sesame seeds, you simply cannot make hummus without this staple ingredient. I also use Simple Truth brand from Kroger brands.
Garlic - I usually say to this ingredient "measure with your heart" but not in the case of hummus! Garlic has amazing health quilities, but too much in hummus can ruin the flavor.

How to Make Avocado Hummus
Step 1: Measure out all of your ingredients, place them straight into the blender.
Step 2: Slice and scoop your avocado into the blender. Open your chickpea - do not drain! keep the juice - and put straight into the blender.
Step 3: Blend until creamy and enjoy!
Tips for Success
- No ice cubes in this hummus - sometimes this trick is added to hummus recipes to help with creaminess, but the avocado does the trick here and the ice cubes actually make this recipe too wet (I tried it so you don't have to!).
- Don't be afraid to overblend, you want the chickpeas well blended with no chunks.
Recipe FAQs
Is this good leftover? Yes, this avocado hummus keeps for a few days in the fridge. It's best eaten right away, but still good. Watch out for browning, that's the oxidation that avocados tend toward the longer they are out of their shell.
What goes best with this? Avocado hummus can be a healthy snack with crackers or chips, or served alongside a Mediterranean meal with toasted pita.
